The Gradual Path of Bliss-Void Practice

A Sustainable Happiness Graduate Workshop
with Joe Loizzo, M.D., Ph.D.

The Nalanda Institute Sustainable Happiness Program (SHP) transplants the genetic code of contemplative living from the Nalanda Tradition — the seminal teachings of the gradual path — into the matrix of our modern science, psychology, and way of life. Since lifelong learning and community are the life-breath of our journey on that path, this graduate workshop offers a rare opportunity to refresh and deepen our understanding and practice in an atmosphere of open sharing, caring dialogue, and unwavering commitment.

The workshop revolves around the most central of concise practice texts distilling the great Tibetan master Tsong Khapa’s (1357-1419) ingenious synthesis of the gradual path, the classic Mentor Bonding composed by Panchen Losang Chokyi Gyaltsan (1570-1662). It touches on all the key insights and practices covered in the Program, prompting us to see connections, prime reflection, and deepen transformation.

The workshop also links the practice of Mentor-Bonding with a related cycle of practice texts that together distill the secret oral transmission of Tsong Khapa’s enlightenment: The Three Principles of the Path, Seven Point Mind-Transformation, Song of Fourfold Mindfulness, and Great Seal Root Text.

The workshop culminates in a Saturday retreat at Tibet House, focused on the tradition observed by the Dalai Lama and his tutors of making Mentor-Bonding the backbone of an integrated lifelong practice of all three vehicles of contemplative transformation. Join us!

Requirements: Workshop enrollment is limited to 12 students, and is only open to graduates of the Nalanda Institute Sustainable Happiness Program.
