Don’t Just Sit There, Take a Stand: Coming Together in Uncertain Times

An online gathering and talk with Dr. Joe Loizzo

Among the ways the pandemic has forever changed our lives, the most disturbing has been how it laid bare the immoral health disparities and financial inequity which structural racism has built into our society. The staggering disparity in how people of color have been impacted by COVID 19 has helped pull back the blinders of denial and privilege that have historically kept White Americans like me from seeing and feeling the lethal force of racism our society has marshaled to keep Black, Brown, Indigenous and Asian Americans oppressed.

For many, witnessing the cold-blooded murder of George Floyd by a White policeman finally shredded those blinders. And it has unleashed the blinding light of righteous indignation and outrage among Black, Brown, Indigenous and Asian Americans as well as among Whites working to be their allies.

Many believe that spiritual practitioners should “stay neutral” in the face of such social injustice, but I stand with Rev angel Kyodo Williams and others who call for us to marry spiritual practice with social action. I will share with you my take on why Buddhist teaching and practice require us as individuals and as a group to harness our practice to fostering an inclusive community that not only offers real refuge for all who need it but also works to disrupt the systemic violence of our larger community.

So if you’re struggling like me with how you can make a difference, please join us as we come together in community to grow and change together.
