An Online Gathering and Dialogue with Drs. Jasmine Syedullah, Doris Chang, and Pilar Jennings

In the midst of the greatest global challenge we’ve faced in a century, the U.S. has just been through one of its most consequential elections. Whether you’re in the U.S. or abroad, I expect you feel like us that our future as individuals, as a people, and as a planet, is in a real sense at stake at this time.

For our 9th Gathering in Uncertain Times, we come together as a community to help each other hold the collective stress and trauma we’ve all experienced as a result of the unprecedented crisis we face, compounded by the extreme divisiveness that has gripped our nation and world so acutely since the last election in 2016. In this meeting, Dr. Joe Loizzo will explore these challenges and the tough questions they raise in dialogue with three distinguished members of our faculty: African Studies/Prison Studies professor and author, Dr. Jasmine Syedullah; Nalanda Institute board member, psychology professor, and cultural competency researcher, Dr. Doris Chang; and our lead Contemplative Psychotherapy faculty, psychoanalyst and author, Dr. Pilar Jennings.

As a community dedicated to contemplative living and learning, how can we make sense of the times we’re in? Can we draw on our contemplative practice to help us face and bear with the chronic stress and trauma impacting our daily lives? And how do we keep putting one foot in front of the other—regardless of the election outcome—on the long, hard road of recovering from the last four years and of moving our lives, our nation, and our world in the only possible direction—towards collective awakening and global freedom.
